‘We did enough to win’: Seibold’s blunt assessment as Manly bomb 16-point lead against Knights

Manly coach Anthony Seibold has lamented his side’s second half performance, with the Sea Eagles bombing a 16-0 halftime lead to suffer a 26-22 loss to the Knights in golden point at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Manly scored three tries in the first half, through Tolutau Koula, Toafofoa Sipley and Haumole Olakau’atu.

The Knights hit back in the second half, with Fletcher Sharpe scoring a double, and Fletcher Hunt and James Schiller also bagging tries.

Tommy Talau scored the Sea Eagles’ only try of the second half.

Kalyn Ponga went over for the matchwinner in golden point.

Seibold had hoped for a better second half from his team.

“Obviously disappointed with the result. We did enough to win the game,” Seibold said.

“(Newcastle) competed really hard in the second half and took advantage of some of the kick contests, I think they certainly won the last plays in that second half and they got some rewards off the back of that.

“There was a ton of spirit from our guys but there was a heap of spirit from the Knights.

“Unfortunately we weren’t good enough in that second half to defend our lead so that’s really disappointing.

“I was thinking that if we could show the effort we showed in the first half, keep competing, then we’d be able to close the game out, but unfortunately we weren’t able to.”

Skipper Daly Cherry-Evans conceded the Sea Eagles let themselves down defensively in the second half.

“We weren’t consistent in that second half,” Cherry-Evans said.

“Whether it was from errors, we allowed a lot of points in that half through our defence.

“We missed a lot of tackles, we allowed offloads, there was just a lot of things that went wrong.

“In the end our defence didn’t hold up.”
