“He’s been in conversations with the Canberra Raiders,” he said.
“The Raiders are looking at some depth. I don’t know if it will play out that way, whether or not he wants to go somewhere and start.
“Options are limited.”
Smith’s looming exit comes ahead of Daly Cherry-Evans’ expected arrival at the Roosters next season.
Smith, who is currently under contract until the end of 2026, has been in and out of the Roosters’ first grade team this season, with the 22-year-old falling behind Hugo Savala in the pecking order.
Canberra will be losing a playmaker of their own in the off-season with halfback Jamal Fogarty heading to Manly to replace Cherry-Evans.
Smith, who can also play hooker, is being viewed as a potential depth signing by the Raiders given Ricky Stuart expects young guns Ethan Strange and Ethan Sanders to be the team’s halves pairing to start next season and into the future.
